How to Pug Dog Health Problems?

Many people are drawn to the pug dog breed, but do not take adequate steps to ensure pug dog health. First recognized in 1885 by the AKC Toy group, the breed has had a long history of interacting with man, one that goes back thousands of years. A curly tail attached to a thick body, and a wrinkly face make the breed simple to identify. Twenty to thirty pounds, and ten to fourteen inches tall is the standard for the Pug breed. Pugs are lovable, cute dogs, but an owner has to know how to take care of the skin problems that are specialized to the breed.

Dog Health Problems

Inspect the dog’s folds carefully for any sign of infection between them, as this is a common problem for Pugs and one that must be fixed by a vet. The folds are highly prone to bacteria infection if any dirt is allowed to build up between them, so regular bathing helps prevent this.

Another factor which could cause pug dog health problems is its eyes. It is because of the unique shape and design of the fact that the eyes are not protected as well as other dogs, and therefore are susceptible to injury and other problems. Any infection should immediately be detected through regular eye exams, and any inflammation is a reason to take your dog to the vet immediately.

If allowed, pugs will invariably eat to excess. Watch your pet’s food intake carefully to keep him at a healthy weight - being overweight could adversely affect a pet’s health as much as it would a person’s. Pugs do not handle heat well, and should never be left in a locked car or left in the sun outside without shade. High temperatures can induce difficulty breathing in Pugs, thus you should avoid leaving them exposed to high temperatures.

Of course, like any dog, taking proper care of your pet and taking him to the vet for regular visits is the best way to insure good pug dog health. Taking decent care of your pet is something that does not require a lot of effort, and it can cause years worth of healthiness and happiness for your pet and you.
