Dog Health Problem

Taking care of a Pug requires special attention that other dog breeds do not, and if you want to adopt one, you have to become familiar with the extra steps required for Pug dog health. This breed has been known to man for over three thousand years, and is a member of the AKC Toy group where it was first recognized in 1885. Among the most recognizable of breeds, the Pug can be identified through its wrinkly flat face, thick body, and curly little tail. Twenty to thirty pounds, and ten to fourteen inches tall is the standard for the Pug breed. There is no denying the adorable nature of these small dogs, but their size and skin often lead to very unique health concerns that an owner has to be aware of.

First, there is the dog’s wrinkly skin and unfortunately, your pug’s adorable skin folds are prone to infection - you must consult your veterinarian immediately at the first signs of infection. These skin infections are easy to prevent by regular washing, to remove any excess dirt between the folds.

The eyes are another major factor that causes Pug dog health problems. A Pug’s face is generally the cause of many eyesight problems, caused by the special shape and location of that part of the body. The eyes should be examined regularly for signs of infection, and of course take the dog to the veterinarian if you see any signs of infection.

If allowed, pugs will invariably eat to excess. Watching your Pug’s food intake is a good idea, because keeping them at a healthy weight is as important as keeping a humans health regulated. Pugs do not handle heat well, and should never be left in a locked car or left in the sun outside without shade. Prolonged exposure to heat is something that will definitely bother your Pug’s breathing abilities, so make sure you do not leave him in areas of extreme heat for any long period of time.

Taking trips to the vet when needed, and practicing basic pet care are the best tips for long term pug dog health. These adorable little dogs will provide many years of happiness for the companions that take care of them responsible.
